The Female Villains Wiki

Mary (Mary Ainslee; 1919-1991) is the villainess from Hokus Pokus, a Three Stooges short released on May 4, 1949.

Mary is a con artist looking to swindle an insurance company out of $25,000, doing so by pretending to be handicapped. In the beginning of the short, Mary is shown boasting about her scheme to her boyfriend, which includes tricking the Stooges (who she lives with under their care) into believing the ruse.

Mary is next shown at the end of the short--at the insurance office about to receive her pay. At that moment, the Stooges crashed into the office after being hypnotized by Svengarlic (who the Stooges went to in hopes of curing Mary). Startled by their appearance, Mary quickly rose from her wheelchair, exposing herself as a fraud. After her check is torn, the furious villainess berated the Stooges and KO'ed them with part of the flagpole that the trio was hanging on.

Trivia[]

  • Hokus Pokus was remade in 1956 as Flagpole Jitters, but in the remake, Mary (played by a different actress) really was paraplegic, while Svengarlic was the antagonist.
