Arming herself

Arming herself

We meet Jane when main protagonist, detective Ronn Warren (Eric Estrada) , chasing Dr Svoboda's main henchman, ended up in the funeral parlour somewhere in San Francisco. Seeing the bad guy entering the parlour through the main door, Estrada goes after him after he picked a lock of the backdoor. Scenes of Warren snooping around the parlour are intercut with scenes of a woman applying a makeup on a female corpse. In various scenes we only see woman's gloved hands, top of her head and small part of her body, obviously dressed in a white nurse-like uniform. It's obvious that both she and Warren are in the same building but unaware of each other. After Warren close the door in another room she is alerted by the sound of it, and turns around and we see her face for the first time. She is wearing a nurse cap and have some kind of illuminating device attached to her nasal bridge. In a deliberate, almost ritualistic fashion, she removes illuminating device and her gloves, takes a long steel pipe from the shelf and slowly exits the room.

Warren enters room full of corpses, dimly lit with green light. He is suddenly attacked by the woman, who disarmed him by hitting his gun-holding hand with a steel pipe. She proceeds to violently swing her steel pipe on him. Defending himself he managed to disarm her and grabs her neck. Seeing she's a woman she hesitates, giving her a chance to suddenly twist his arm and deliver several fast and hard kicks to his belly, crotch and face. After her fierce attack Warren falls to the floor, but she kicked him three more times and then grabs him in a neck lock. Gasping for air, he managed to break free by parting her hands and pushed his elbow hard in her belly. Finally gaining the upper hand, he slammed her in a face with a back of his hand. He then grabs her hair and delivers a hard punch to her face, knocking her down.

Immediately after his victory, he is attacked by the man he was following and gunfight in the morgue ensues. After he lost his gun (thanks to crafty Warren's move), man starts to run. Warren is prevented from chasing him by the woman who, after regaining her conscience, grabs the attacker's gun (with a silencer) from the floor and points it at Warren. With the blood running from her nose and mad expression on her face, she fires two times, missing him (hitting the leg of one corpse). Warren fires back and shoots her in the left side of the chest. Thrown against the wall by force of the shot, she slowly fell on the floor, dead.

In later investigation Warren learns that her name is Jane Klugenford , using the alias Katya Kluge, that she was owner of the funeral parlour and Dr Svoboda's wife.

Appearance[]

In the belly

In the belly

Attractive brunette of about 28 (we learned from her record during Warren's post-mortem investigation that she was born November 27 1957) with a typical 80's perm hairstyle. Her fight with Warren showed that she possessed considerable physical strength and was skilled in martial arts.

Character and role[]

During her brief appearance she never uttered a single word and her real role in Svoboda's plans and deeds are never clearly stated. On the surface, it looks like she was just someone who tried to defend her property from the intruder, loosing her life in the process by the set of unfortunate circumstances and probably oblivious to her husband's schemes.

BUT...

K.O

K.O.-ed

Consider the following facts, clearly presented in the film:

  • Henchman entered her funeral parlour through the front door, talked to Svoboda using her phone and then recorded his voice on a tape demanding the ransom from the City of San Francisco. We never saw him actually meet her, but we can judge by the way he enteres and his relaxed demeanour (speaking loudly on the phone and while recording his voice) that he was not trying to hide his presence, and by the lack of her reaction to it (as opposed to her immediate alert when she heard Warren making a sound) it's obvious she was aware of his presence and had no problem with it. We can safely assume that two of them met immediately after his arrival (while we were watching for several minutes Warren going around building to find another entrance) and he briefly explained to her that he was followed, so she get back to her work, but was prepared that guy who followed him might end up at her place. So when she suspected Warren 's in the building, she readily went to confront him, instead of calling a police like any normal person with nothing to hide would do if suspecting that someone broken in his/her place.
  • Now it's her payback time!

    Now it's her payback time!

Warren found generator that earlier in the film Svoboda used to charge his death-ray machine during one of his attacks parked in the garage of her parlour.
  • We learn that she owned a boat which Svoboda used as a place to hold and from which use his death-ray machine. Actually, old fisherman tell Warren that she personally sailed the boat to the harbour, making it obvious that she could not be unaware what it carried onboard.
.

..or is it?

Well, at least she won't have to worry about rhinoplasty

Well, at least she won't have to worry about rhinoplasty

Warren get to know about woman he killed

Warren get to know about woman he killed

And again

And again

All these facts points directly that she was not unaware wife or unwilling accomplice but someone deeply involved and instrumental in Svodoba's crimes. We don't know what her motive is: monetary gain, love for her man or something else . The fact that she is running her own business that, judging by the size of the premises and number of corpses is doing well, shows that she was not financially dependant on him. But, motive here is immaterial. Her will to assist him despite knowing that his deeds caused many brutal deaths (and will result in many more) makes her true villainess who got what she deserved.
